For the Alumni Watch for the month of October I have to apologize as it kinda creeped up on me as busy as things have been. I reached out to Brandon Lewis, former Alumni Watch himself and Tech graduate if he knew of anybody he keeps in contact with that would be a great Alumni Watch for October and he mentioned Erin Backus. I instantly agreed as Erin was is an amazing young lady who accomplished great things in high school and continuing that at the University of Texas. I went ahead and told Brandon that this one was his again to write, so before I share his story, I would like to know why she is in athletic training at UT but never said anything to me while she was here. She had plenty of free time she could have helped out here?!?!?! Just kidding, wish you the best Erin and when you open up your own hospital if you need athletic trainers to work for you let me know. And now, Brandon Lewis’s October Alumni Watch Erin Backus!

Fall is finally here and it’s time for another Trimble Tech Alum Spotlight. For the month of October, I would like to spotlight a jack of all trades Erin Backus, Class of 2015 graduate. I spent three years of my high school career getting to know this outstanding student-athlete. Erin was also well known in the hallways of Green B. Trimble Tech. She’s a bright young lady and strives for greatness even today.

Her four years at Trimble Tech she was in National Honor Society where she held the position of President of NHS. She is a true scholar being awarded the National Achievement Scholar and FWISD Superintendent’s Scholar while at Tech. She was also a talented athlete while also at Tech lettering in volleyball, track, basketball, and band. In basketball, she was a First Team All-District selection, Academic All-State selection and MVP of the Cowtown Classic Basketball.

She also achieved some accolades on the track where she captured a 2nd place finish in the 400m which qualified her as a Regional qualifier in the 400m. She also captured First Team All-District in Volleyball. She was involved outside of the classroom as well she was involved with EMT training and big part of her church. Erin put an exclamation point on her time at Trimble Tech as was the Valedictorian for the Class of 2015.

She decided to attend the University of Texas at Austin where she was the recipient of the Jeanne L. and Michael L. Klein Forty Acres Scholarship.

At the University of Texas at Austin, Erin would go on to major in Athletic Training and African-American Diaspora Studies. She’s currently a junior where she is still excelling as she has a current GPA of a 3.6. She is heavily active in her major where she has worked with the Texas Longhorn Football Team during spring football activities.

She aspires to be a doctor and with her wanting to become a doctor she would like to use that to open her own treatment hospital. The time I have known Erin she has that determined pedigree where she kept her eyes on the prize and never gave up on her goals and she continues to excel at everything she does.

I spoke with Erin briefly through a small phone interview, where she left some encouraging words and how she made it through. She said it took “Perseverance and Prayers”. She also left with an interesting and deep thought “What you put in Trimble Tech is what you get out of Trimble Tech. She found so many ways that helped her be successful. We honor Erin as our October Alumni Spotlight, keep up the good work and look forward to your future endeavors as time goes on.

I would like to thank Brandon for his great continued contribution to this website’s Alumni watch. Also would like to wish Erin the best the remainder of this year and the rest of her college career at the University of Texas. I would also encourage anybody who knows of Tech Alums who are doing great things after high school to please drop me a note to Jason.Braud@fwisd.org with Alumni Watch in the subject line, they do NOT have to be athletes as I want to spread the word all the great work Tech Alumni are doing. Thanks!
