October is Breast Cancer awareness month as well, so Sudden Cardiac Arrest awareness is often overlooked when it shouldn’t be as it is the leading cause of death in the United States. The Trimble Tech Athletic Trainers are showing their support and will be wearing SCA shirts for the month of October. SCA kills more than 325,000 a year, which is more than breast cancer, lung cancer, and HIV/AIDS combined. Screening go a long way in finding any problems you or your loved ones may have, especially if there is a history of heart issues in your family. Knowing CPR and how to use an AED are also essential as you don’t know when someone may need your help, that someone might be a loved one. If you are interested in getting screened, check out the internet and Google ECG screenings in your area and or you can check with you primary care physician.
Trimble Tech would like to acknowledge and thank several people/groups that have been huge in the awareness of SCA to Trimble Tech and in general.
Project Adam and Laura Friend have been instrumental in assisting Trimble Tech. With the Help of Laura Friend and the Run for Sarah, Trimble Tech has two additional AED’s on our campus. Project Adam is a great source for help for SCA and several times a year offer free ECG’s screenings with a prescription from a PCP. Project Adam can be found:
Please take a minute to watch this video, this shows the importance of SCA awareness. Laura Friend shares her story along with others. One of my coaches, tells our story and the young man at the end of the video with the blue KC hat is named Luis, he is alive today because of an AED. He recently graduated from college and going for his Master’s.
The Ryan Powell Memorial Foundation has also been great in giving FWISD schools as other surrounding schools numerous AEDs that were in desperate need for additional units. These units are not cheap and the Ryan Powell Memorial Foundation raises funds through yearly fundraisers. This years fundraiser is a dinner and dance with a silent auction that will be held on Saturday, October 21st starting at 6:30 PM. For more information please feel free to visit their website at:
The Cody Stephens Foundation is also a HUGE advocate for SCA and making sure athletes all over the state of Texas get screened to hopefully prevent any future SCA’s. Mr. Stephens started the foundation with the purpose of raising money and through Who We Play For offering FREE screenings to athletes across the state of Texas. The foundation has helped have athletes at Trimble Tech screened I believe on three different occasions and helped numerous other FWISD schools get screened. This can’t be done without fundraising and donations, the Cody Stephens Foundation can be found at:
A BIG THANK you to all of these groups, please check out their websites and if you so feel please donate and or share this link with any family and friends. SCA is no joke, its the number one killer in the United States. Please do your part and learn CPR and know how to use an AED. Better knowing how and not have to use the information then needing it and not having it. Please visit these links and donate if you can as they are the people are pushing the awareness and making sure our young athletes are safe in the future.
