Where to begin with this season’s Tech Bulldog Soccer Team, truth be told they have technically been in the playoffs for sometime as they had to battle the last few weeks of the regular season and it was the last game that they knew they were locked in the fourth and final playoffs spot. This meant that the Bulldogs would be doing into the Bi-District Round of Playoffs to face Mansfield Summit who had a record at the time 23-1-2, throw on top of that three of the Bulldogs starters were not going to be in the lineup due to injuries after a long season and club play. The Bulldogs squeezed that game out in PK’s and went on to face the third seed Birdville in the next round and had a little bit better performance pulling out the 2-0 victory there which set up the Grapevine match up.
Tech started out the game with Grapevine a bit slow and in a little over five minutes in a lapse in the back and Grapevine seized the opportunity and took a 1-0. Tech controlled a large portion of play in the first half and had numerous opportunities but the Grapevine goalie made numerous large saves keeping them in the game. With 19 minutes left in the first half Tech was awarded a penalty kick and they cashed in on that opportunity. Tech continued to control the remainder of the first half but were unable to find the back of the net and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1. The second half was a bit more back and forth but again Tech and opportunities, more so than Grapevine, but were unable to capitalize on them. With around 23 minutes left in the game Grapevine finished another one of their few opportunities to take a 2-1 lead. Tech had a couple of quality opportunities after that but again it was Grapevine who put the game away with a late goal with about 2:38 left in the game for the final goal of game and a 3-1 victory for Grapevine. Congrats to them and we wish them the best in the rest of their playoff journey.
I am not going to say the better team won the day because the Bulldogs controlled a large portion of the play and had their opportunities, end of the day however it is about putting the ball in the back of the net and Grapevine capitalized on their few opportunities when Tech did not. Trimble Tech and Fort Worth ISD is proud of the effort put forth by the Bulldogs and Coach Williams. They are one of few FWISD teams still playing and the last of the 7-5A teams still playing. The underdog Bulldogs pulled off a couple GREAT wins with numerous players banged up with injuries late in the season despite their fourth place finish in district and made some people take note of the program Coach Williams is building! Looking forward to what Coach Williams can do next year with those Bulldogs who are returning!
